352 pangolin scales seized in Odisha; 6 interstate smugglers held

In a major breakthrough, the Forest Department on Sunday busted an alleged pangolin scale smuggling racket and arrested six persons during a planned operation in Malkangiri district. According to officials, the accused were allegedly in the middle of a deal involving pangolin scales near Dam Side Chhak on the outskirts of Malkangiri town when a special Forest Department team swooped down on them. Raid Following Prior Information The team had reportedly received prior information regarding the suspected wildlife trafficking deal and was keeping a close watch on the area. During the raid, officials seized as many as 352 pangolin scales. Three motorcycles and five mobile phones were also recovered from the possession of the accused. Six persons were arrested in connection with the case. Of them, four are reportedly residents of Malkangiri district, while the remaining two belong to the Baipariguda area. Further Probe Launched The Forest Department has now launched an investigation to determine where the pangolin scales were procured from and their intended destination. Officials are also probing whether the alleged smuggling network has links extending beyond Odisha. There is suspicion that the scales were being collected for sale at higher prices in other states. Investigators are examining the seized mobile phones and other evidence to identify possible buyers, suppliers and other individuals associated with the racket. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the network and whether more people are involved in the alleged wildlife trafficking operation.
