Assam CM Lays Foundation for Rs 48,000-Crore Power Plant in Dhubri

Assam: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district, marking the start of one of the biggest power projects in Assam . The project, being developed by Adani Power, involves an investment of around Rs 48,000 crore and is expected to substantially add to Assam’s electricity generation capacity. The plant will have four units of 800 MW each, with commissioning planned in phases from December 2030. The project is expected to provide up to 20,000 jobs during construction and around 5,000 employment opportunities once operational. It is also expected to generate business opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers in Dhubri and other parts of Assam. The Chapar plant is part of a broader Rs 63,000-crore power investment planned in Assam, including pumped storage projects. The state government has said investments across sectors are expected to cross Rs 80,000 crore over the next few years. Sarma said the Chapar project was an outcome of the investment momentum generated by Advantage Assam 2.0 and would strengthen Assam’s position in the region’s energy sector. “Assam is fast emerging as the region’s energy hub, with several mega energy projects in the pipeline,” Sarma said, adding that the project would also create opportunities for local industries and enterprises. The foundation stone ceremony was attended by senior state government officials, industry representatives, local community members and Adani Group Director Jeet Adani.
