The driver of the first car, identified as Ashutosh Mendali, was detained after police recovered four cartons of cough syrup. The second car, an unregistered Ertiga, reportedly hit a tree while trying to move away. Police said its driver, Pritam Biswal, allegedly opened fire, following which police fired in self-defence. Biswal sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was taken to Rengali for treatment. Police recovered another 20 cartons of cough syrup, a country-made 9mm pistol and empty cartridges. The exact quantity and composition of the seized syrup are being verified, while police are investigating its source, destination and the wider network. The incident comes a week after another police shootout in Sambalpur involving Mohammad Irfan.
