Freedom from Freedom: Understanding the Deeper Meaning of Independence

A child’s perception of parental supervision, a spouse’s caution, a teacher’s advice or a mentor’s guidance can easily be interpreted as a restriction on freedom. The same action that is intended as concern may appear to be controlled when viewed through the lens of “my freedom.”
