The two states and the Centre have been pursuing dialogue and technical consultations on the issue. A July 30 meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Paatil also focused on an amicable settlement through dialogue and technical cooperation. The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, constituted in 2018, has also been considering the progress of the states' settlement efforts; its next hearing has been adjourned to September 28, with further technical discussions scheduled under the Central Water Commission.
