Suriya and Jyotika’s ‘The Sequel’: Couple renew wedding vows after 20 years of ‘love and war’
Twenty years, two children and countless memories later, Suriya and Jyotika have said “I do” all over again. Calling their vow renewal “The Sequel”, the couple celebrated two decades of marriage with an intimate Christian ceremony surrounded by their children, Diya and Dev, family and close friends, including actor Karthi. Far from presenting their journey as a picture-perfect love story, Jyotika used the occasion to celebrate everything that has kept their marriage going- imperfections, adjustments, sacrifices, understanding and, as she put it, “20 years of love and war.” Also Read: Suriya and Jyothika on the verge of separation! Kanguva actor clarifies A Second Wedding Filled With Emotion Jyotika shared a dreamy video from the ceremony on Instagram. She walked down the aisle with her son, while their daughter stood beside Suriya. The couple exchanged vows and became emotional, with glimpses of their original white wedding adding a nostalgic touch to the celebration. Why Jyotika Called It ‘The Sequel’ For Jyotika, the ceremony was less about recreating their first wedding and more about honouring the life they have built together. "THE SEQUEL - A vow renewal, celebrating our 20 years of love and war. And no, this is not a celebration of a perfect marriage. This is a celebration of imperfections, of adjustments, of understanding, sacrifices, of loving each other selflessly. This is a celebration of 'us'. The people we have become for each other." Choosing Happiness Over Perfection Looking back at the moment, Jyotika reflected on how a vow renewal once seemed like a distant dream. "How ironic- a dream which felt far from reality is now a reality I will spend my entire lifetime dreaming of ! So here are my vows - I vow to be a happy person - because I choose to see only life's positive side. I vow to celebrate life - because life itself is a gift when the man whom you love, respects you beyond himself," she wrote. "I vow never to complain- why should I? When even something as vast as the sky doesn't have the privilege of touching the ground! Look around, everything in existence is incomplete. It's how we choose to fill the gaps." Family, Health And Motherhood Her vows carried gratitude for Suriya and their children, while also highlighting the value she places on health. She wrote, "I vow to be thankful - as every morning I wake in the arms of a man who protects me, and for my beautiful children who've given my life a meaning. And me, a reason to live. I vow to be healthy - because that is the only true asset we ever build. Even the fanciest brick houses will always have their leaks, termites, and renovations." On being a mother, she added: "I vow to be the best mother - not because I cook, or clean, or help, but because I smile, a smile that makes my children want to relive the story their appa amma lived." From Co-Stars To Soulmates Jyotika also acknowledged the arguments and reconciliations that have accompanied their two-decade journey. "I vow, my Suriya, to always remain that imperfect wife, who fights, and then makes up, only to grow a little more closer to you each time." Their friendship eventually turned into love, and after dating for several years, they married on September 11, 2006. Two decades later, Jyotika placed friendship at the heart of their enduring relationship. "I vow to cherish our friendship most of all - because it's rare to find your equal, your confidant, your gossip partner, and your best friend, all living inside this one special man who also happens to be your husband and the father of your children. So here's to our next twenty years - the imperfect us, with the perfect understanding," she concluded.
