Donald Trump threatened tariffs, refused to rule out coercion and insisted that American ownership of Greenland was essential for national security. The final agreement gives Washington permanent military access, expanded basing and overflight rights, and greater power to restrict sensitive investments by non-NATO states—but Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty and retains its right to determine its own future. The deal is strategically meaningful and could survive any eventual Greenlandic independence, yet the United States already possessed extensive military rights under a 1951 agreement. Trump wanted possession of the Arctic island, its territory and its mineral wealth. What he obtained was an expanded security arrangement—and much of its foundation already existed before he turned Greenland into a crisis inside NATO.
