Urban female jobless rate inches up even as broader labour market improves

The unemployment rate (UR) among urban women aged 15 and above rose marginally to 8.9 percent in August from 8.8 percent in July, bucking the broader trend of improvement seen elsewhere in the economy, according to government data released on Tuesday. This uptick stands out starkly against the headline unemployment rate, which held steady at 5 percent nationally, and against rural areas, where joblessness fell to an 8-month low.The urban female UR remains significantly higher than its rural counterpart, which dropped to 3.9 percent in August from 4.3 percent in July, underscoring a persistent rural-urban divide in employment outcomes for women. Urban female UR was at 8.9 percent recorded a year earlier in August 2025. The flat year-on-year trajectory suggests limited progress in absorbing urban women into the workforce compared to their rural counterparts.Elsewhere, the data offered more encouraging signals. The overall labour force participation rate (LFPR) climbed to 55.6 percent from 55.4 percent in July, driven largely by rural gains. Female LFPR overall rose for a second straight month to 34.8 percent, powered by a 0.6 percentage-point jump in rural female participation to 39.4 percent.
