Assam Agitation Veteran Bakulika Goswami Passes Away at 76

Bakulika Goswami, wife of late Sarat Goswami, who was known as one of the prominent activists of the Assam Agitation in Nagaon , passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday. She was 76 years old. Bakulika Goswami breathed her last at around 4 pm at Down Town Hospital in Guwahati, where she had been undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke a few days ago. She later developed a cardiac complication while undergoing treatment and died on Saturday. Originally a resident of Amolapatty in Nagaon, Bakulika Goswami had shifted permanently to Guwahati along with her family due to prolonged health complications. She had been staying with her son and daughter-in-law in a rented house in Sarumotoria, Guwahati. She had been suffering from severe arthritis for a long period, which significantly affected her mobility. After undergoing knee replacement surgery, she had to depend on a wheelchair for several years. Despite her physical difficulties, Goswami gradually recovered to a considerable extent through mental resilience and yoga. During her stay in Guwahati, she remained actively engaged with issues concerning the Assam Agitation and Nagaon’s social life. She regularly wrote on these subjects for newspapers and social media platforms. Goswami had also completed a book documenting her writings and experiences relating to the Assam Agitation and the social life of Nagaon. Although the book had already been sent for printing, she suffered a stroke shortly before its planned release and was admitted to Down Town Hospital. She passed away before the book could be formally launched. Despite belonging to an affluent family, Goswami was known for leading a simple and disciplined life with her son and daughter-in-law. Her son-in-law, Rupak Sarma, is the sitting BJP MLA from the Nagaon-Batadrova constituency and has served two consecutive terms. However, those political connections did not define Goswami’s personal life, as she preferred to maintain a modest and independent lifestyle.
