Zubeen Garg Case: Court Document Tampered at Baksa Jail, Probe Ordered

Assam: Allegations of tampering with a court document in the Zubeen Garg death case reportedly at the district jail in Assam ’s Baksa surfaced on Friday after a document sent by the fast-track court for obtaining the signature of jailed figure Shyamkanu Mahanta was allegedly replaced before being returned to the court. According to the information available, the original document had been sent by the court to the Superintendent of Baksa Jail for the purpose of obtaining Mahanta’s signature. The document was reportedly forwarded to the jail authorities through the appropriate court process. However, the matter came to light after the document subsequently sent back to the court by the jail authorities was found to be different from the one originally forwarded by the court. The discrepancy was reportedly noticed when the document returned from the jail was compared with the original court document. Questions were subsequently raised over how the document sent by the fast-track court could have been replaced while in the custody of the jail authorities. The mismatch between the original document and the one returned to the court prompted the court to take note of the matter. The court has now directed an investigation into the alleged tampering. The Inspector General of Prisons has been instructed to conduct an inquiry into the matter and ascertain how the discrepancy occurred. The prison authorities have also been directed to submit details of the action taken following the investigation to the court.
